Message from President

Dear friends, It is a great honour and pleasure to inform you all regarding the formation of Foundation for Dysphagia Research and Education (FDRE) and Society for Swallowing Disorders (SSD) under the patronage of renowned head and neck, plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Subramania Iyer.
There is a vast number of patients suffering from dysphagia or swallowing dysfunction in our country. For that matter, it a malady that is globally prevalent. Unfortunately the number of care givers is disproportionately low in India , when compared to the Western world.
Swallowing pathology is gaining lots of ground of late and it is heartening to note that many young Speech and Language Pathologists are now specialising in this challenging yet fascinating field. Like phoniatricians ( ENT surgeons and Laryngologists trained in voice therapy) , more and more ‘ Phagiatricians’ ( ENT surgeons and Laryngologists trained in swallowing therapy) will definitely give the necessary impetus to this fast growing field of medicine
It is in this context, SSD was formed. Creating awareness and interest in dysphagia management among SLPs and ENT surgeons is our primary motive. Exploring new avenues in dysphagia training programmes is another goal. Involving primary care physicians like neurologists/neurosurgeons,Head and neck oncologists and surgeons as well as other related professionals like nutritionists, dietician’s and psychologists should make this association very comprehensive and consequently very fruitful
Let us move together forward in search of better solutions to the problems of patients deprived of one of the most basic requirements, i.e., eating and drinking normally
